Every Sikh prayer ends with the same line. Nanak naam chardi kala, tere bhane sarbat da bhala. By the grace of the Name, may the spirit rise; may all in your will be blessed. The closing note of the Ardas, recited by millions every day.
is the most exported, most repeated, and most misunderstood concept in modern Sikhi. It is often translated as "high spirits" or "positivity". Both translations miss the point badly enough to be dangerous. Chardi Kala is not optimism. Chardi Kala is not the avoidance of suffering. Chardi Kala is the discipline of remaining inwardly rising while life happens, whatever life happens to be.
